This Month's Safety Simplified Blog - "Fall Protection Calculations"
Using a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) without evaluating fall clearance is like bungee jumping with a bungee cord that is too long. It places workers in a situation that can result in severe injury and death. Prior to using a PFAS, employees must have a basic understanding of fall clearance. Is It Safe?
Not a Chance!
This drag conveyor is not properly guarded. Drag conveyors have an in-running nip point (pinch point) where the chain contacts the sprocket. Workers can be injured when hands and fingers come in contact with nip points on drag conveyors. Drag conveyors should be fully enclosed. If visual inspection is needed to verify product flow, permanently affixed grids or polycarbonate shields can be installed.
Safety Made Simple offers courses on machine guarding and screw and chain conveyor maintenance. Click here to view our searchable course catalog. If you you have a photo of a workplace situation that you would like to share, send it to us! We may use it in the Safety Scoop for others to learn from!
